I'm a beginner as far as child themes are concerned.
I have create a child theme with a basic style.css and uploaded to my themes directory.
In the admin section when I go to the change theme section I do not see the my child theme. Infact an error is shown that templates file is missing.
Please help. Thanks in advance.

in your style.css, do you have a section where it says "template:"?
your style.css should look something like this:
/*
Theme Name: Rose
Theme URI: the-theme's-homepage
Description: a-brief-description
Author: your-name
Author URI: your-URI
Template: use-this-to-define-a-parent-theme--optional
Version: a-number--optional
.
General comments/License Statement if any.
.
*/
That bold part needs to be defined. it should be the filename of the theme.
